Being on the Other Side of the Job Search

Wednesday, August 04, 2004

This past week I've been getting resumes for people to fill the position I'm leaving. It was two years ago that I was in a similar place. I moved to Denver from Orlando and immediately starting looking for a job. After a while I gave up and restarted my business.

So as I get the resumes now I'm more sympathetic. I understand what they are going through, how they want communication. That was my biggest gripe when I was doing my search. Even when I had a phone interview and in person interview, it was difficult waiting to hear back, even when I initiated phone calls.

I interviewed for a position about a month and a half ago. I've been leaving voice messages with the hiring manager, and finally today I heard from him. Their company got bought and they were in a holding pattern. It still would have been nice to hear something.

In the meantime, I decided to leave the company I was with and get commitments from various clients to do greater amounts of things. If this company I interviewed with still wants me I doubt I'll go with them. Maybe they can outsource some work to me as a contractor, but I'm ready to have more control over my destiny.
